Author Interview with Cynthia Fabian!

What does it feel like when you just can't do what the other kids, I mean stars, do? Can't kept trying, but he never seemed to shine as brightly as the other stars, and was always teased and bullied by others. Can't feels that he is less than the other stars and just cannot shine. It wasn't until Can't realized he Can, that everything changed for him. Find out how Can't became a hero and ultimately became Can. Able is the star who had it all. Able helps Can't to realize that he can really shine. Connect with Can't, Able, and all the stars that live in their neighborhood and beyond in the star-studded children's book Can't and Able: An Inspirational Story. The colorful artwork by Daniel Stevens creates beauty and fun throughout the universe. And as we all know, the star is the limit! Originally from New York City, Cynthia Fabian now enjoys meditation and the quiet life in Somerset, New Jersey. "I grew up with a disorder. I always felt like I could not shine, just like Can't. When I became a teacher, I saw many children that were experiencing the same difficulties. They were teased and often felt smaller. This book is for all of you, struggling and not knowing how to change your circumstances. If you simply believe, you can change your own circumstances. Believe in yourself and you will see the wonders of change are in your power." Publisher's website: http://sbpra.com/CynthiaFabian

I am honored to introduce the Author of  Can't and Able, Cynthia Fabian!  Thank you for being here Cynthia...

Cynthia Fabian, the author of "Those Sweet Nothings," a humorous look at dates gone haywire, a children's book, "Second Hand Art" about a community that survives a hurricane.  A look at epilepsy. In "Orchestra in Our Brain," and just released, "Can't and Able" Cynthia hopes to convey a very important message; a message that reminds each one of us that no matter what life dishes out, it's all about perception and how we look at the world. We have the choice to create positive opportunities.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BOOK.
I have four books to date and three of them are children's books.  My latest book, Can't and Able, an inspirational story, focuses on believing n yourself.  It uses star metaphors to illustrate how everyone shines in their own beautiful way.

WHEN AND HOW DID YOU BECOME A WRITER?
I started writing at the age of eleven, I was having difficulty dealing with my life after my mother's death.  At the suggestion of my teacher, I started a diary and wrote my inner secrets to my new friend.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST WRITING ACHIEVEMENT?
Helping children and people to overcome obstacles by speaking to audiences and also writing books that have a protagonist that is challenged.

WHAT IS THE HARDEST THING ABOUT BEING A WRITER?
Always trust your gut, do your best to follow what you believe is best when you write or write for hire.  At times I trusted someone else's advice and it did not work for me.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT?
I am working on a new children's story that illustrates a child in a wheelchair.  The child has MD and her name is Erica.  I am hoping to reach many more children with this new book. This book will be called Erica and Tripod, publication date March 2014.

WHAT GENRE(S) DO YOU WRITE?
I mostly write children's books that focus on difficult problems for children.  But, I have also written a book for adults entitled, Those Sweet Nothings.  It is a book about dates gone wrong.  It is a fun, sometimes stark book of vignettes.

DO YOU EVR SUFFER FROM WRITER’S BLOCK?  IF SO, HOW DO YOU GET PAST IT?
I believe the best way to get past writer's block is to meditate and write down all of your dreams. It is not only a sure fire way to have more ideas, but also get rid of a problem that keeps you from not creating.

My father, an artist, taught me to crumple up a tissue and write down what I see.  Although it has been many years since his passing, I hold the childhood lesson dear to me and teach others to just write freely.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PLACE TO WRITE?
I have a parrot and I work with my parrot at home at my desk.  I used to need to have to work in Starbucks or other location, but I felt that when you work in a public location, it is not as free as when you work in a comfortable location.  Often times people come up to you and disturb you in thought and that can be problematic, as you may lose your train of thought.

WHAT’S THE GREATEST COMPLIMENT YOU EVER RECEIVED FROM A READER?
I recently got a review that was from a young boy.  He wrote that he was in a similar situation, where he was bullied like Can't my protagonist and the book helped him to realize his potential.

WHAT WAS THE WORST COMMENT FROM A READER?
He did not realize why I did not make my epilepsy book more complex, however, my book was reviewed by several neurologists for its content.  I also do work with the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group.  I am present at all of their meetings and conventions.

OTHER THAN WRITING, WHAT ELSE DO YOU LOVE?
Reading, yoga, animals, my parrot and husband...not necessarily in that order.

DID YOU HAVE YOUR BOOK(S) PROFESSIONALLY EDITED BEFORE PUBLICATION?
Yes, my books are edited several times, but in editing as in life glitches can get past even the most crackerjack editors.

HOW DID YOUR BOOK COVER COME TO FRUITION?
My publishing company usually has the cover illustrated, however, my artist, Daniel Stevens has worked with me as my artist for every book.  He is an artist that can feel what the author writes, a real gift.

DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN ANY OF YOUR CHARACTERS?
Yes, when I was younger I was very much like Can't in Can't and Able as a child I never believed in myself.  I also see myself in the character of Robert in Orchestra in Our Brain.

DOES THE PUBLISHING INDUSTRY FRUSTRATE YOU?
Yes, but things have gotten so much easier since the Internet has helped so many to achieve the dream of publishing.

DID YOU EVER THINK OF QUITTING?
At some point I will leave publishing, but I don't see myself ever stopping the writing process.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE ‘SUCCESS’ AS A WRITER?
Helping so many to achieve a voice, when I was a teacher of English.  Continuing to find children that need to feel inspired as a speaker.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR NEW WRITERS?
I realized early on I could write about anything and did not want to specialize so I was happy when I could coin the phrase, "I am a general writer."
Find yourself and your own voice.
Don't ever give up, keep finding your own voice.
Find a voice that speaks to others as well.

And now for the speed round of questions...

Author Interview with Charlotte Bloomfield!

Author Interview with Charlotte Bloomfield!

Shortly after arriving at Castle Mount School, twelve year old Crystal realises something ghostly is going on. She learns of a ghost of a baron who haunts the castle ruins, which overlooks the school, has managed to escape his ghostly prison in the body of 'Megan'. It is up to Crystal and her new friends, to stop the ghost from carrying out his deadly revenge and to save Megan and the School.

I am honored to introduce the Author of The Ghost Within, Charlotte Bloomfield! Thank you for being here Charlotte...
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BOOK.
I am a mum of two and I live on the Suffolk Coast in the UK. ‘The Ghost Within’ is my first published children’s book, and is a ghostly novel aimed at nine plus year olds. It is set in a spooky boarding school which is under attack by a nine-hundred year old ghost of a baron. The story focuses on the importance of friendship and how working together can really beat the bad guy.

WHEN AND HOW DID YOU BECOME A WRITER?
I have been writing since I was a child but didn’t start writing children’s books till about eight years ago. This is also when I knew I wanted to be an author.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST WRITING ACHIEVEMENT?
Writing and getting‘The Ghost Within’ published.

WHAT IS THE HARDEST THING ABOUT BEING A WRITER?
Coping with rejection and accepting criticism.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT?
I am doing the amendments to my next children’s book, ‘Corridor of Doors,’ which will be published July/August this year. I am also writing the sequel to, ‘The Ghost Within.’

WHAT GENRE(S) DO YOU WRITE?
I write ghost stories for adults and children.

DO YOU EVER SUFFER FROM WRITER’S BLOCK? IF SO, HOW DO YOU GET PAST IT?
Yes, I do and I find the best way to get past this is to take time away from writing. I find if I force writing it doesn’t happen, it should flow naturally.

WHAT’S THE GREATEST COMPLIMENT YOU EVER RECEIVED FROM A READER?
I have received many compliments from those fantastic people who have read my book and the best has to be, ‘you are the best writer ever and we want a sequel!

OTHER THAN WRITING, WHAT ELSE DO YOU LOVE?
My family. I have a beautiful five year old daughter and a gorgeous eight month baby boy as well as a very loving and supportive husband.

DID YOU HAVE YOUR BOOK(S) PROFESSIONALLY EDITED BEFORE PUBLICATION?
I did. I find this is extremely important as mistakes can be missed.

HOW DID YOUR BOOK COVER COME TO FRUITION?
Myself and my husband chose the image from Fotolio but we did alter it quite a bit to be how we wanted it by using the program gimp.

DOES THE PUBLISHING INDUSTRY FRUSTRATE YOU?
Yes, very much. It is highly competitive but that still shouldn’t put any writer off, it just means you have to make your story the best it can be and be willing to do a lot of research and more importantly never to give up! There are also many options open to new writers other than mainstream publishing, it does mean though lots of hard work but it is worth it to see your work in print.

DID YOU EVER THINK OF QUITTING?
Yes, many times over the years. But for me writing comes naturally and I enjoy it.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE ‘SUCCESS’ AS A WRITER?
Completing a story and that is from beginning to end. I don’t think it matters whether it’s a short story of 1000 words or a full lengthy novel of 100,000 words. And I don’t think you have to have it published to be successful as a writer, you should please yourself before anyone else.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR NEW WRITERS?
Write for you before anyone else
Write what you know
Never give up
Take criticism and expect it!
Deal with rejection and move on
Make first impressions count
Edit, edit and edit some more

ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO ADD?
The Ghost Within is available to buy off Amazon either as an e-book or in paperback and the sequel will hopefully be out by the end of this year – keep an eye out.

Author Interview with Malia Ann Haberman!

Author Interview with Malia Ann Haberman!

In Chase Tinker's world, magic, lies and secrets can be a lethal combination...
Thirteen-year-old Chase Tinker can't understand why he has the power to move things with his mind. Besides that, his dad has been missing for over a year, causing his mom to be too upset to pay much attention to her sons, so now he's been busted for shoplifting. As if this isn't enough to worry about, his younger brother Andy suddenly has a weird magical ability too. Can things get any crazier? Chase thinks.

Then, a grandfather they thought to be long dead arrives at their door. He wants Chase and Andy to come visit him for the summer so they can learn about their supernatural heritage and why they have magical powers in the first place.

The boys soon find out that Grandfather, along with their cousin Janie, lives on a remote island in the middle of Puget Sound in an out-of-this-world house where fantastic magic can be found in practically every room, stairway and corridor. Chase can't believe their dad has been keeping so much from them.  It's an even bigger shock when Chase learns that all their magic is controlled by a very powerful and mysterious Relic in the attic, and if anything happens to this relic, every bit of Tinker magic will be lost forever. He's even more disturbed when he learns his family has a dark and powerful enemy that is determined to steal all their magic, their house and their relic.

Now Chase must find a way to stop these evil beings, while at the same time figuring out what has happened to his dad, unraveling even more Tinker lies and secrets and not letting on that he has a huge crush on the housekeeper's daughter.

Chase Tinker and the House of Secrets:
After spending the summer at his grandfather's gigantic, incredibly magical house, thirteen-year-old Chase Tinker thought things couldn't get any more bizarre, or that the secrets and lies couldn't get any worse, but he was wrong.

As summer turns into Autumn, join Chase and his family for even more magical craziness. Craziness that will include: the sneezing of strange powers, the reappearance of the evil Marlowe family, another frightening kidnapping, the discovery of a mysterious, magical girl, a dangerous rescue mission, and a secret so mind-boggling, it will lead to a shocking climatic finish that will turn Chase's world completely upside down and leave him feeling like one of the worst people on the planet.

I am honored to introduce the Author of  the Chase Tinker Series, Malia Ann Haberman!  Thank you for being here Malia, let's jump right in...

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CHASE TINKER SERIES.
Well I live in the Seattle area with my 4 wild and crazy ferrets. In between writing, reading, eating, sleeping, playing video games on my iPad and watching TV, I teach ballroom dancing.

I got the idea for my series from a dream. It was while I was working as a Real Estate Agent. One night, after showing my clients a bunch of homes, I dreamed I was living in a gigantic house where every room was filled with magic. The next day when I told my daughter about it, she thought it was a great idea for an MG/Tween book. And she was right, as usual. So that's how my Chase Tinker Series was born. :)

The whole series is about good vs. evil; white magic vs. dark magic; the awesome Tinker family vs. the evil Marlowe family.

There are four books in the series:
Chase Tinker and the House of Magic (available as ebook, audiobook, hardcover and trade paperback)
Chase Tinker and the House of Secrets (available as ebook; others formats will be available in the fall.)
Chase Tinker and the House of Destiny (will be released in 2014)
Chase Tinker and the House of Mist (still being written)

WHEN AND HOW DID YOU BECOME A WRITER?
I've always loved reading so from about the time I turned 14, I knew I wanted to be a writer. Though, at the time I'd just discovered that boys really weren't so bad, so I began writing sappy love stories and poems. Now that I look back, I'm pretty sure most of that stuff sucked a whole bunch. :)

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST WRITING ACHIEVEMENT?
Ha! Just getting my first book published.

WHAT IS THE HARDEST THING ABOUT BEING A WRITER?
Staying focused. I have a tendency to go off onto other tasks when I should be writing. I blame it all on Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, MSN, chocolate and all those other distractions. :)

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT?
I'm having fun working on the 4th and last book in my Chase Tinker series. It's taking loads of brain power to wrap up everyone's storylines, and have it all make sense.

WHAT GENRE(S) DO YOU WRITE?
I like writing fantasy for MG/'Tween and YA, but I have some ideas rolling around in my head that are more contemporary. So we'll see what happens with those.

DO YOU EVER SUFFER FROM WRITER’S BLOCK?  IF SO, HOW DO YOU GET PAST IT?
I haven't really suffered with the what-the-heck-should-I-write-today-because-I-have-absolutely-no-ideas writer's block. I usually know what I want to say, it's just getting it out of my brain and onto the computer screen that I have problems with. Reading back on what I've written helps sometimes, but not all the time.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PLACE TO WRITE?
My favorite place to write is sitting on my floor in my living room with my coffee table as my desk, my computer in front of me, and my TV going as background noise. Sometimes I listen to music, but the problem with that is I can't stop myself from singing along and getting up to dance. So it's probably best to not have the music on too much during writing sessions. :)

WHAT’S THE GREATEST COMPLIMENT YOU EVER RECEIVED FROM A READER?
I've had so many wonderful compliments and reviews from my awesome readers for "Chase Tinker and the House of Magic" that it's hard to pick just one. It makes me all warm and tingly when they love my book and say that it's fun, funny, witty, bone-chilling, adventurous with believable, loveable and relatable characters, truly magical, brilliant, thrilling, entertaining, phenomenal, well-written, descriptive, imaginative, awesome, creative, entertaining, and lots of other fantastic, heart-warming praise.

Thank you so much, everyone! <3

WHAT WAS THE WORST COMMENT FROM A READER?
I've actually had only one reviewer say some things that weren't nice. One was that my characters were cartoonishly flat. It hurt, but I know you have to take the good with the bad. The way I look at it is you're not a real author until someone hates your work. Ha!

OTHER THAN WRITING, WHAT ELSE DO YOU LOVE?
Reading and dancing. Two of my favorite dances are Salsa and Swing.

DID YOU HAVE YOUR BOOK(S) PROFESSIONALLY EDITED BEFORE PUBLICATION?
Yes, because I know how important that is, but even with professional editing, books can still have errors and other issues. :(

DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN ANY OF YOUR CHARACTERS?
Definitely Chase. He's impatient like me, hates onions, sucks at math, but he'll stick up for himself when he has to. Also, no matter what plan of action he takes, things have a way of blowing up in his face. That seems to happen to me way too often, too. A happily ever after would really be nice at some point. :)

DOES THE PUBLISHING INDUSTRY FRUSTRATE YOU?
So much!

DID YOU EVER THINK OF QUITTING?
Never!

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR NEW WRITERS?
Just keep writing and writing and never give up. If you have the talent and drive, good things are sure to happen.

ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO ADD?
One character I will never kill off is Maxwell the ferret. :)

And now for the speed round of questions...
